(This letter was written to Tammy Hester, Executive Chef and Director of the SPFB Kids Cafe. It was addressed January 12, 2010.)
First of all, I want to start off by introducing myself. My name is Dorothy. I have six kids, three girls and three boys ranging in age from 8 – 18 years-old. Kids Cafe is a real good program, especially for the kids whose parents work and don’t have a hot meal after school.
This (Kids Cafe) is a place where they can come and have a good time with friends and meet new people. And we also try to show the kids how they are supposed to eat healthy so we have nutrition ed. day once a month. The kids love it because they get to have smoothies.
This program is also good for kids to learn how to respect other people; volunteers and other kids. And we try by keeping the kids off the streets. By having this program they can play basketball, football, and other activities.
We are so blessed. Without the help of other volunteers that help cook and prepare our meals, we wouldn’t be able to feed our hungry children. It has touched my kids because I volunteer my time during Kids Cafe to help feed the kids, do crafts, and other activities.
My seven-year-old son wakes up every morning during school days; first thing he (asks) me is if it is Kids Cafe day. I tell him, “Today is Monday.” His quick response back to me is, “Yes!”
We go to the center today. So I think by having this program we have really kept a lot of kids off the street and out of trouble. So if you decide to ever do what I do most of the time; volunteer at a Kids Cafe. The doors are always open. You will experience something new that has touched a lot of little hearts. So I hope this program will continue to grow more and that the Lord will give (y’all) the strength that we all need to continue this program.
So I am coming to a close on this letter and hope that someday we will meet in person. But thanks to everyone that volunteers their time. This is a wonderful program. I will keep (y’all) in my prayers so (y’all) can continue to grow.
